Local History of West London

West London sits along the Commissioners Road corridor โ€” a route that predates the city itself and connects the neighbourhood to the earliest chapters of London's settlement history.

Commissioners Road โ€” Simcoe's Trail

1793

Commissioners Road follows a path older than the city it runs through. When Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe journeyed from Niagara to Detroit in 1793, he followed a Native trail that cut south of the Thames River through this part of the province. The trail was widened and improved by Crown Commissioners โ€” the officials responsible for colonial road infrastructure โ€” and the name has persisted ever since. The road West London residents commute on today is the same corridor Simcoe travelled over 230 years ago.

Brick Street Cemetery โ€” 370 Commissioners Road West

1813

One of the oldest cemeteries in the London area sits on Commissioners Road West at 370 โ€” a designated Ontario Heritage Site. Established in 1813, it served the pioneer families of Westminster Township, the rural municipality that predated the City of London and covered most of what is now West London and the surrounding areas. The cemetery is a direct connection to the earliest European settlers in this region and remains a protected heritage site within the neighbourhood.
